Stephen Fraser

Stephen FraserA film and television buff, self-professed lapsed musician and computer aficionado, Stephen Fraser’s practice reflects his interests and experiences in television, film, music and the internet.

Stephen formed Fraser - Entertainment Law in January 2003 after a decade of working in law firms and entertainment related organizations in Canada and the United States.  His clients have included film and television producers, online music providers, broadcasters, cablecasters, copyright collectives, feature and television writers, multimedia artists, composers, performers and publishers.

Since 2006, Stephen has worked with one of the largest producers of television programming in North America.  He has worked on productions that have aired, or will air, on ABC, CBC, CBS, CTV, FX, Global, the Hallmark Channel, HBO, HDNet, Lifetime, Logo, Movie Central, MTV, Showcase, Syfy, The N, Teletoon and TMN.

Stephen began his legal career in New York City as a business and corporate, copyright and trademark lawyer.  He later joined one of the city’s best-known intellectual property law firms where he specialized in internet, entertainment and technology licensing.  As he expanded into film and television production work, his client base extended to the major US and Canadian production centers.

Over the years Stephen has acquired a breadth of experience that is rare among entertainment law practitioners in North America.  His practice embraces the fundamentals while focusing on new and changing areas such as use of the internet for the legitimate distribution of content and cross-border deal-making for clients in the United States and Canada.

Fluently bilingual in French and English, Stephen is an active member of many industry and legal associations.  He is licensed to practice law in the States of California and New York; and is called to the bar in the Province of Ontario.

Other Lawyers

Fraser - Entertainment Law engages other lawyers and specialists on an as-needed basis and will, after consultation with a client, assist in finding proper counsel for matters that are outside its expertise.  The firm is not a "full-service" general law firm.  Its focus is on the practice of entertainment law for a select and sophisticated clientele.
